Years 5 and 6, as the final stages of primary school, provide a critical opportunity to solidify students' understanding of fundamental concepts. This period not only ensures a strong foundation but also allows students to gain a head start as they prepare for high school, facilitating a seamless transition from primary to secondary education.
Our Year 5 Maths program places a strong emphasis on applying mathematical concepts while introducing the final key topics of primary school mathematics, such as probability, time zones, and angles. With a greater focus on problem-solving, the program helps students consolidate their skills and apply their learning effectively, setting the stage for continued success in their academic journey.
As students progress into Stage 3 English, we continue to emphasize comprehension skills as the cornerstone of the subject. At the same time, we place greater focus on writing by introducing a broader range of styles and types. Our program is designed to enhance students' ability to effectively use various language forms and features, elevating the quality of their writing and helping it stand out.
Our Year 5 Thinking Skills program covers a diverse range of problem-solving areas, including evaluating the quality of arguments, identifying strong evidence, and recognising flaws in faulty reasoning. Additionally, the program emphasises visual reasoning and pattern recognition, equipping your child with enhanced critical thinking abilities and preparing them to tackle future challenges with confidence.
Our Year 6 Maths program begins with a strong emphasis on selective test preparation, revisiting key concepts covered throughout primary school to ensure a solid foundation. From Term 2 onwards, the focus shifts to preparing students for the transition to high school mathematics, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed for this next stage of their academic journey.
Our Year 6 English program emphasises short writing exercises designed to provide rapid feedback, fostering swift growth and optimal performance in the selective test. Following this, the program transitions to refining students' writing skills to meet high school standards, while maintaining a strong focus on enhancing comprehension abilities.
Our Year 6 Thinking Skills program begins with a focus on selective test-style questions, helping students improve their efficiency and accuracy in tackling this specific format. As the program progresses, the emphasis shifts to more abstract problem-solving, ensuring students are well-prepared to face the complex challenges they will encounter in secondary school and beyond.
As graduates of Baulkham Hills High School, the founders of Orion Coaching deeply understand the importance placed on the Selective Test by both parents and students. With this in mind, we design our syllabuses and individual exercises to optimise every student's potential, enabling them to perform at their very best.
Our Year 5 and 6 WEMT (Writing, English, Maths, and Thinking Skills) classes run for 2.5 hours per session and are priced at $72 per lesson.
Please note that from Term 2 onwards in Year 6, WEMT classes will no longer be offered. Instead, we will provide specialised classes focused on preparing students for high school mathematics. These classes are 2 hours long and are priced at $60 per lesson.
